I recently found out that infants need to have their eyes checked starting around 6 months to make sure the muscles and nerves within the eye area are functioning properly. With that said, I called my regular eye clinic to see if they can schedule my 10 month son for an eye exam, however, their eye doctor that works with the pediatric population no longer worked at the clinic. So with a quick Google search, I came across Richmond Hill Optometric Clinic. I called in to book an appointment and received an appointment for the following week. Intake forms were sent online to my email to be filled out, and they were quick and easy to complete. On the day of my son's appointment, he refused to take a nap that morning and was not a happy camper during the drive there. I called in to see if they would be ok with a fussy baby and Duleeka was very reassuring over the phone while I panicked having a screaming baby in the back seat of my car. So, we continued our way to the clinic. Once we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Duleeka. Seating in the waiting area was very limited. However, the appointments were moving pretty efficiently so we didn't have to wait around long. We first went to a room for a questionnaire with one of the staff. He asked questions about my son to help better understand his eye needs. Once we were done, we went back to the waiting area to wait for the doctor. When it was our turn, the doctor welcomed us into her room and did a nerve and movement test to make sure everything was functioning with my son's eyes properly. She also gave suggestions on how to continue helping with his eye development and keeping them healthy. Everything went well and we booked for his next eye exam in a year.

What is optometry, and what can optometrists do for us? If you had asked me this question a few months ago, I would have told you that optometry is basically finding the right eye glasses prescription to make things less blurry. Optometrists are the people who help you with that: they sit you behind the machine, ask you "which one is clearer: number one or number two?" and then give you a prescription for new glasses. Now I realize just how narrow and limited my understanding is of this profession. A few months ago, I sustained a head injury that resulted in vision changes, including light sensitivity, dizziness, and double vision. When I went to see my family doctor, she recommended that I go get my eyes checked at the Richmond Hill Optometric Clinic, adding that she herself is a patient of Dr. Chawla. I quickly booked an appointment at Richmond Hill Optometric Clinic. When I first arrived, I wanted to leave right away. This clinic is BRIGHT (very clean, but very bright!), and absolutely unbearable with my extreme light sensitivity. I am emphasizing this point because once we started experimenting with prisms, the clinic's lights immediately became more tolerable. I didn't even notice the subtle change until Dr. Chawla mentioned it. With the prisms, my eyes and my body started to relax, and it changed how I was standing/walking as well. So, I ended that visit with an order for new glasses with prisms. I know it's hard to believe that prisms could make such a drastic difference, but it has something to do with changing how light hits your eye. My husband was equally skeptical when I first told him that the room almost instantaneously got less bright. He wouldn't believe me until I picked up my new glasses and he saw first-hand that I was able to return to some of my pre-injury life activities with the help of the new glasses. It's been three weeks with my new glasses, and my initial experience still stands. Prisms are helping me, but my journey to full recovery continues. As I wait patiently for an MRI appointment, I am so thankful for the team at the Richmond Hill Optometric Clinic for improving my quality of life in this recovery period. Everyone at this clinic has been friendly and patient, especially Joanne the Optician, when I struggled to describe what feels wrong with my glasses. I will be returning to this clinic soon, and this will be my family's optometric clinic of choice for years to come. Honestly, I can't think of one negative thing about this clinic. Highly recommend!

I want to commend the Vision Therapist Melissa on her expertise and dedication. My son's vision has improved immensely due to the one on one sessions, and the homework activities personally designed and tailored to him by Melissa. Highly recommended. Thank you for doing what you obviously love to do!
